On the approximation of electromagnetic fields by edge finite elements. Part 1: Sharp interpolation results for low-regularity fields

چکیده
We propose sharp results on the numerical approximation of low-regularity electromagnetic fields by edge finite elements. We consider general geometrical settings, including topologically non-trivial domains or domains with a nonconnected boundary. In the model, the electric permittivity and magnetic permeability are symmetric, tensor-valued, piecewise smooth coefficients. In all cases, the error can be bounded by h times a constant, where h is the meshsize, for some exponent δ ∈]0, 1] that depends both on the geometry and on the coefficients. It relies either on classical estimates when δ > 1/2, or on a new combined interpolation operator when δ < 1/2. The optimality of the value of δ is discussed with respect to abstract shift theorems. In some simple configurations, typically for scalar-valued permittivity and permeability, the value of δ can be further characterized. This paper is the first one in a series dealing with the approximation of electromagnetic fields by edge finite elements.

Approximation of Conservative Fields and the Element ‘Edge Shape Matrix’
The accuracy of finite element approximation on tetrahedral elements is studied using the previously derived maximum eigenvalue condition. This condition is linked with the minimum singular value of the element ‘edge shape matrix’ that characterizes the flatness of an element. A geometric interpretation of these results is discussed. From the theoretical viewpoint, a better insight into the m...
متن کاملInterpolation Error Estimates for Edge Elements on Anisotropic Meshes
The classical error analysis for the Nédélec edge interpolation requires the so-called regularity assumption on the elements. However, in [18], optimal error estimates were obtained for the lowest order case, under the weaker hypothesis of the maximum angle condition. This assumption allows for anisotropic meshes that become useful, for example, for the approximation of solutions with edge sing...
متن کاملEffect of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields on antioxidant enzymes in valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.). Sara Farzpourmachiani1*, Ahmad Majd2, Sedigheh Arbabian2, Davoud Dorranian3 and Mehrdad Hashemi4
In this research, the effects of electromagnetic fields of various strengths (0, 1 and 2mT) have been investigated on antioxidant enzymes activity in Valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.). The dry and wet (soaked for 30 min) Valerian seeds were exposed to electromagnetic fields 30 min per day for 3 days. Each treatment and control groups had 3 replicates and 10 seeds were employed for each replic...
متن کاملVisualizing Edge-Conforming Discrete Field Quantities in Electromagnetic Field Problems with Interfaces
Finite element-based electromagnetic field simulation strongly benefits from using edge-conforming representations of the electric field. In this paper we address the visualization of discrete field data resulting from such simulations on 10-node quadratic tetrahedral grids. The use of higher-order grids enables, on the one hand, the accurate approximation of curved interfaces between electroma...
